A session (or touch) begins the first time a user visits your website and loads the application. A machine_guid or Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) is created.
The application sends the GUID, Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) parameters, Uniform Resource Locator (URL), website referrer, Internet Protocol address (IP address), and user agent information to the application's API which creates a new session. The session GUID becomes stored in the user's browser.
The GUID does not track any personally identifiable information (PII). The GUID never expires and is only reset if the user clears their local storage. The GUID follows the device, so the user will have the same GUID across all websites they visit, regardless of the company or community.
Every website visit registers a new session unless one already exists for the user. A session ends after 30 minutes of inactivity or when the local storage is cleared.
This is not considered an event or an interaction. Events belong to a specific session.
Clearing the cache of a browser does not reset the GUID.
Application sessions are measured differently for Google Analytics and may not display the same information. For more information regarding sessions in Google Analytics, see
this page.
